How We Serve

The Christ Child Society of Fort Wayne believes that change IS possible, regardless of barriers that might be present.  Committees work to fill a need so that children in difficult circumstances who need help receive the attention and respect they deserve.

Christ Child Society Members directly affect the lives of children by how they serve. Each member gets involved in the programs that best fits their skills, interests, and personal goals.

Christ Child Society of Fort Wayne services:

Layettes
The signature program of all Christ Child Society Chapters is the Layettes Program. We work with agencies and hospitals in the distribution of layettes to new mothers, often to new mothers who have nothing to begin their new parenting responsibilities. Items included in the layettes are blankets, diapers, clothing and toiletry items. Children born into difficult circumstances need help, and our dedicated volunteers are there for them.

Coats for Kids
Working with local school systems and agencies (currently, East Allen County Schools, Fort Wayne Community Schools, and some parochial and charter schools), warm coats, hats, gloves or mittens and a gift card for shoes or boots are distributed to children (infants through 8th grade) identified by case managers or others as being in need.  Over 100 Christ Child Society member volunteers help with shopping, inventory control, hanging coats on racks and distribution to our clients.

“My Stuff” Backpacks
Through the Christ Child Society ministries, children in crisis are provided a sturdy backpack filled with age appropriate items such as toiletries, educational and school supplies, reading and activity books and a stuffed animal. The backpacks are provided to homeless children, foster care children and children who are victims of abuse. This backpack is often the only item these children can call their own.

Tutoring
The Christ Child Literacy have reached local preschoolers with our Reading Rangers Program.  Our members read to area preschoolers in two area schools. Age appropriate books are selected, we read to the children and then follow it with a craft that follows the theme of the book. Each child takes home the monthly book to share with their parents and siblings along with a letter encouraging family participation. Christ Child Society members see the Christ Child in every child, treating them with the attention and respect they deserve.

Crib Club at the Women’s Care Center
The three locations of Fort Wayne and the Auburn Women’s Care Centers assist new and expectant mothers by offering parenting classes, counseling and encouraging good health and self-sufficiency. Through their programs, coupons are earned to be used in the Crib Club which is stocked with new baby clothes, diapers and baby care items. The Christ Child Society provides and organizes these items and staffs the three Crib Club sites. We believe better communities are built when we partner with others to serve children and families in need.

The Sewing Committee
The Sewing Committee found a need and filled it by partnering with Vincent Village and SCAN Courtyards to teach basic sewing skills to its clients. The Sewing Committee also supports the coats program by sewing hats, mittens and scarves. Christ Child Society of Fort Wayne members helps children and parents build self-esteem in a fun and nurturing environment.
